3 out of 5 stars 60GB is the way to go   November 21, 2007
16 out of 44 found this review helpful

Pros:
- Blu-Ray on the cheap (but this is a game machine folks)
- Free Online play (but matchmaking needs improvement)
- Cheaper

Cons:
- No Ps2 games will play on this (get the 60gb version)
- Less ports than the other version
- No good exclusive games yet except drakes and ratchet
- Motostorm is still $59 everywhere... huh???

5 out of 5 stars PS3 an Evolving Platform   November 18, 2007

The PS3 40GB has all the features I have been looking for in a console. I upgraded the 40GB HDD to 160GB, relegated the 40GB to external storage, and added a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard and Blu-Ray remote. The system can play native HD video captured from a camcorder, browse the internet, play Blu-Ray movies, view jpeg files, and upscale DVDs. PlayTV and a Messenger service will be great additions.

The redesigned PS3 40GB 65nm Cell low power requirement makes it well suited for its multifunction role. It's Blu-Ray 1.1 compliant, and requires no hardware update (unlike current BD players).

Articles highlighting the technical prowess of the PS3 state: "Astrophysicist Replaces Supercomputer with Eight PlayStation 3s, the PS3 may be finding a new calling in the realm of science and research. Right now, a cluster of eight interlinked PS3s is busy solving a celestial mystery involving gravitational waves and what happens when a super-massive black hole, about a million times the mass of our own sun, swallows up a star."

The PS3 might just help rid the world of some pretty serious diseases. Stanford University, through their @Home project, is launching an initiative that lets your PS3 crunch life-saving medical data when you are not too busy playing games on your shiny new super-computer console. "To participate, users will just download a program into the PS3's hard drive. Then they just need to leave the machine on when they're not playing. The Folding@home team will divide their complex calculations into manageable chunks and then send it to the participating machines." Sony says that users will also be able to watch their PS3s solve the mysteries of the human genome right before their eyes.

The PS3 is an evolving platform with great potential.

5 out of 5 stars Cheapest Blu-Ray Player out there, with extra features!   November 18, 2007

I just got a 1080p Plasma... so I did some research on Blu-Ray players to take advantage of the Full HD (1080p). The PS3 is the cheapest Blu-Ray player that I can find. With features like a 40GB Hard Drive, and Wireless Internet it's even worth paying a little extra, but I'm not! Got my from Amazon, free shipping (save on gas and time), and no tax, can't beat that... You also get FREE 6 total Blu-Ray movies (1 with this pack, and 5 if you purchase a PlayStation 3 between October 1, 2007 and January 31, 2008 and receive 5 free Blu-Ray movies via mail-in offer...

5 out of 5 stars Coolest and quietest version of a great system   November 16, 2007

I've had the 60GB, the 80GB, and now the 40GB PS3. The 40GB is best for two reasons: heat and noise. It is the coolest and quietest version of a great system, but it is also cheapest than either (because of the smaller chips it uses).

You also save money on power to run the PS3 and electricity to cool off your room with AC. I ran it folding for Stanford all night last night, never got nearly as warm as the 60GB or 80GB did. But I thought those were both very quiet and didn't think they got that hot either.

Sure, once the 80GB gets the new chips (could be coming soon), I'd buy that for the USB and larger hard drive and Motorstorm. But you can later attach a USB hub, for about the same additional cost of the 80GB if you need to. As far as backwards compatibility, don't you have a PS2 if you have all those games? And I don't know who would ever buy PS2 games once they have a PS3.

4 out of 5 stars Pay attention: THIS VERSION CAN'T PLAY PS2 GAMES   November 14, 2007

A great system with HD capability. But if you are a hardcore gamer you should buy the 80GB (or even better the 60GB if you can get one) for backwards compatibility with one of the best consoles of all times the PlayStation 2.

This version is good if you don't care about playing PS2 games ,the Memory Stick / SD readers, playing SACD, or having 2 USB ports instead of 4.
