Constant Update December 9, 2007 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
There really is in my opinion the only thing that I liked above other security software is the email checking.
On the negative side the software is constantly updating itself which on my PC slowed it down or stopped other use. When doing a virus check with only 25G in use it would completely stop all other use for over an hour (I could play solitare if I didn't change games).
Slow bootup problem solved November 22, 2007 25 out of 28 found this review helpful
I don't often write reviews, but the negative reviews on this program are so disturbing that I wanted to share one positive experience here.
I use it on two four-year-old Dell computers, neither of which is very fast, and it performs very nicely. It has a non-intrusive, streamlined interface, does what it's supposed to, and the price is right.
The slow bootup problem existed in an earlier version and (as other reviewers have pointed out) is solved in version 7.0.408.000.
Frankly, I don't understand the negattive reviews at all.
Effective but interfering to the point of CONSTANT AGGRAVATION November 18, 2007 ZoneAlarm is good at doing what you ask - keeping the cookies, viruses, pop-ups and other annoyances at bay. I used TrendMicro/PcCillin last year and, though I had it set to block the same things as Zonealarm, when I checked, there were cookies all over, pop-ups which kept popping up -- annoyances that managed to get through. But TrendMicro/PCCillin rarely if ever interfered with speed of downloads(which probably indicates it wasn't working as hard as ZA) and ZoneAlarm CONSTANTLY interferes. I have BroadBand. If the system is scanning or downloading updates, though it says you can keep working, you can't. It's like driving on the interstate during rush hour with road construction for miles and every exit blocked. Maybe with a speedier processor, I wouldn't have these problems. My system is an Athlon Sepron 3000+ 2GHz, with 512MB RAM, and 120GB hard drive -- I'll let the more system knowledgeable of you gauge if that makes a difference in the performance of the software. I will say when I test by turning off ZA, everything goes quick, smooth, and aggravation free.
When I'm ready to purchase my next pc protector, it won't be ZoneAlarm, probably won't be TrendMicro. Of the two, I'd go with Trend, because though it didn't prevent the little annoyances, it did prevent big headaches like viruses, worms, etc, with little interference of process. What I'd like to know is..Is there software that has the benefits of both, doing what it's supposed to do without interfering with what I'm trying to do?
My laptop will never be the same November 8, 2007 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Yikes, I had read some great reviews on this product and as it was time to renew McAfee I figured go with a higher reviewed product. Bad idea. I don't know if deleting McAfee screwed up my laptop or if Zone Alarm is just poorly written, but I had nothing but problems. And to make sure they drove me nuts their Tech department doesn't speak to the customer they send random emails...how's 24+ hours strike you for response time. Stick with your current internet security suite, Zone Alarm may work for you, but then again it may not..but happily, and kind of oddly, their customer service department moves QUICKLY when asking for a refund.
Best firewall you can get November 7, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I first started using ZA Security Suite 2 years ago, after having started with Norton, and then Trend-Micro. After getting infected with drive by trojans by hitting seemingly valid web sites, I decided to use some of the free online firewall testers, and guess what. None of the Symantec or Trend products provided you with real protection. Slam bam, the testers showed me a complete list of My Documents on my PC.
That's where I discoverd ZA, as one of the few Software Firewalls that locks down not only network traffic out of your machine (inbound is not important, asmost cable modems contain a DHCP server to do network address translation, so that your PC is hidden to the outside) but locks down any screwing around with the Windows Registry. Thats where all the action is. It even detects messages from my canon printer telling them when I print! No other product triggered that kind of stuff.
ZA had a few versions that were problematical, two years ago, but it was worth working through the issues, because I have never gotten junk on the machine from any source since then. It uses Kaspersky AV and AntiSpyware in conjunction with its own Firewall.
If you have been having problems, they most likely have to do with vestiges of other AV and Firewall software that has not been cleaned out. You cannot have more than one AV/Firewall product locking down your machine. You can however, use Webroot Spysweeper, as I do, as an additional layer of protection against adware and spyware. Furthermore, if you are using XP with less than 512 MB of RAM, you asking for trouble.
The ZA alerts, allow you to easily see the full path and file name of the object it is asking you about, and if it contains the names of any vendors you recognize, then you allow it. If you dont, its garbage and you deny access. Nothing difficult about that. If you dont know, Google the file name, and within 5 seconds you can find out who published that piece of software and whether you want to allow or deny access.
I recommend the latest version of ZA highly, if you don't want to suffer identity theft.
