Not renewing, simply not worth the frustration. January 3, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I see I'm not alone in my frustration with this product. I bought ZASS after seeing that it scored highly in several 'reputable' publications and websites(which I'll now take with a hefty grain of salt from now on). Seemed like a good deal until I installed it. The constant warnings and alerts were annoying but expected. What wasn't expected is the way ZASS totally takes over my pc on startup. I have to wait anywhere from 1 minute to over 5 minutes for ZASS to finish loading up, initializing, scanning...whatever it is. Even after the initial startup I experience lock ups lasting a minute or so. A minute might sound like a minor annoyance but when you're on the internet or running a program having your pc lock up a half dozen times over a period of a couple of hours it becomes more than a 'minor' problem. For a supposed finished, non-beta product that you paid for it's inexcusable. No renewal from me.
Good Product-OUTSTANDING Support ! January 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So far, the product is just about what I've read about. Yes, it slows down the system a little (about the same as Norton) but the additional level of protection is worth it. I had a minor problem with the registration number (an I instead of a 1) but they fixed it immediately via e-mail with no fuss...and try that with a lot of software companies these days.
AWFUL TERRIBLE WORTHLESS DANGEROUS!!! January 2, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!!! Foolishly, I didn't listen to the other reviewers on this site. Nothing but problems. The first thing ZoneAlarm did to my computer when I tried to install it was give me the Blue Screen of Death and crash my notebook computer. I rebooted and ZoneAlarm crashed it again. So I rebooted in Safe Mode, uninstalled ZoneAlarm, deleted the folder, and rebooted again. Problem solved. Then I snapped the disk in half. I wasn't even going to ask for a refund or try any of the workarounds - downloading updates, installing in safe mode, etcetera. I'll just buy something else. If I could give this product -negative five stars, I would. This is a terrible, awful, dangerous software product. Maybe they'll fix the problem in a later version, but right now ZoneAlarm is not ready for Vista. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!!! STAY AWAY!!! I hope this review helps you.
Additional issues with ZA January 1, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have a five-year old Dell 4550 with 1GB. Windows XP PRO with multiple users. In general, I do not have the performance problems noted by many. I have maintained the updates and now use 7.0.462. Once in a while vsmon will go wild, probably due to a memory leak. That seems to be when the system has not been rebooted for a long period as I usually hibernate each night.
I have never experienced anything bad getting through, so it does the job.
My issues are: 1. When there is a security advisory, say for a new program, the dialog box appears for all users that have logged in. I have complained about this to no avail. This means that when my wife gets on, she sees messages about something I managed earlier. This is sloppy programming. Do you know of any other program that broadcasts warnings to all users? 2. There is no known provision for setting the OS priority for updates and scans lower. It just ain't that important to get the hourly update. 3. I do not like how long it takes to initially start a user after a restart. Usually at least an additional minute. 4. The dialog box for a warning supposedly should contain advice based on knowledge of that program. I have yet to see any content, even for widely-known programs.
I agree with an earlier post about the level of control that is possible. For example, the kid's user only can use IE, which has the parental controls set. I use Firefox with parental control turned off.
My license is about to expire. I am also uncertain about taking a chance on Norton again. The price for this package is good, however.
[Added] Oops, I just had to log off my user as vsmon was hitting 99%. Terminating open programs did not help. This time the memory usage was not that high, so perhaps it is not a memory leak.
Works great, never had issues, top rated by IT pros December 31, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I switched to ZoneAlarm a few years ago after using McAfee for several years. ZoneAlarm has a top-rated firewall (available for free) and anti-virus protection equal to other competitors (Norton, McAfee, etc.). Though McAfee generally worked well, there were a few minor performance and incompatability issues that arose, but the deciding factor was when they changed their user interface from a standard component based configuration (antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware, privacy) to a vague "goal" oriented configuration which obscured control of the components. If you want clear control, the component interface is superior. ZoneAlarm provides a clear interface to the components, just as McAfee used to. I have not had any performance issues with ZoneAlarm installed on WinXP and WinVista computers. One update issue was quickly resolved by addressing content in the user forum. Installation and configuration is a snap, and fine-tuning is available for those who want full control. Though I see many negative reviews on Amazon, these are in conflict with my experience and all the prof. reviews from IT pros I have found.
