I have been using the product for about 2 months and so far not a problem, in fact I purchased a second one. I use them for my 2 large dogs. one who I have on a diet to lose a few extra pounds. you can set it so it can feed from 1-3 times a day and you set the times, plus the amount from about 1/2 - 3 cups each meal time.

The petmate is just great. I do recommend it.
Programming the feeding sizes and times to feed may not be the easiest and most intuitive thing but if you have '5 and use the manual as a guide you will be OK.
I travel regularly and the petmate saved my friends the time to come home and feed the cat while I'm out.
Some people had concerns on the servings. I measured the 1st 5 servings and they were very close to the 1/4 cup. In my case, this is more accurate than what I used to do in the past which was to give one "hand full" of food. A hand full could have been any where between 1/5 cup or 1/3 of a cup.
I did not rate the product 5 stars only because I would have liked the option of plugging the petmate to the wall to insure it never runs out of battery.

It doesn't dole out an exact amount of food, and it's not safe from hungry kitties who reach up into the hopper mechanism to get more food out.

I bought this feeder to avoid having open feeding for my cats while I was away for a week. I set it to feed them twice a day in set amounts, like I feed them myself by hand while I'm home... Not sure what happened while I was away, but when I got home there was SO MUCH food sitting in the bowl; it had collected day-after-day it seemed. My cats essentially had the open feeding that I was trying to avoid! Plus my one cat (the fat one, the one with the insatiable appetite) definitely gained weight in the one week I was gone... I definitely went back to feeding my cats by hand once I got back, and I'll probably use this feeder again when I go away for more than a few days, but it didn't dish out the right amounts while I was gone. THAT'S for sure.

We have been using this type of feeder for several years. It works quite well. We had to replace it once, after about 4 years, because the timer stopped working. We have since acquired a second cat and a second feeder. We are very happy with both.
