A must have for violin musicians September 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I picked one of these up recently to help me tune my violin. Before I had this, I was using a built in Pitch Pipe that was connected at the end of the tail-piece.
I thought that using the pitch pipe, and then tuning the rest of the strings should be sufficiently accurate. I now realize that I was wrong and that it was negatively effecting my studies.
The CA-30 has 3 LED Lights and a Gray LED Screen. The LED Screen will give you details on how many cents the note is off, and it will also display what note it thinks you're trying to play. For example, If I play an "A" on my violin but it's too sharp, the dial on the screen will tilt to the right, and point to a cent value.
The CA-30 seems smart enough to detect any note you play for it. So it's really helpful for me because I'll have it turned on the whole time that I'm practicing. The CA-30 provides instant feedback on whether my playing style is sloppy or not via the 3 LED Lights at the top. The LED Lights illuminate depending on how in(or out) of tune the note you are playing is. If your note is dead on (or within +/- 20 cents) the green center LED will stay lit. If it's way off, the green light will turn off and either a RED sharp light or a RED flat light will illuminate. I'm trying to play all of my finger exercises pitch perfect. It's hard, +/- 20 cents isn't very noticeable unless you're really paying attention.
As a novice and a student the CA-30 has really improved my playing. I wasn't expecting such a cheap investment to have such a positive effect on my playing style.
I did some experiments on the CA-30, to test to see just how accurate it was. I have a few Basic Waveform VST synth instruments that I can trigger via MIDI from my step sequencer. I put the CA-30 by the speakers and created a single sine-wave for the note C D E F ...etc. The Korg CA-30 correctly registered them all as "Dead On" perfect notes.
After I did that, I played the pitch pipe on my violin (An "A"). The Korg CA-30 detected that it was about +20 centimes to sharp. Once I got everything tuned, I realized that my first position finger tapes were no longer accurate. I had been playing out of tune but I think I was compensating for the bad notes without realizing it.
The Korg CA-30 now sits on my music stand while I'm playing. If my finger positions get sloppy the Korg CA-30 is going to no longer give me a green light for whatever note I'm trying to play. It's like having someone giving you feedback so you can avoid getting into an unbreakable bad habit with finger positions. While it's not a useful indicator with fast pieces. It still provides feedback on most of my quarter notes.
Great Tuner! September 22, 2008 Great tuner and very compact too! As soon as I got it, I popped in the batteries and was ready to tune my guitar. Worked like a dream. I also like the fact that I can tune other instruments as well if needed. My only complaint is that sometimes it can be very sensitive and if other people are talking or listening to tv in the same room, it can pick up other frequencies. But as long as you are in a quiet room, it works perfectly.
sweet tuner I love this thing September 2, 2008 sweet tuner I love this thing . it will tune anything and $$ is the best .
Its Great August 28, 2008 I recomemnded this tuner , is easier to use and vere accuracy. I dont know nothing about music but with this tuner was very easy tunning mi guitar and my violin.

Excellent, but not perfect August 24, 2008 I've had two of these tuners. They are well known among bass instrument players for being able to lock in on the lowest pitches better than most other tuners. They're durable and have a long battery life. Unlike most other tuners, in noisy environments they don't lock in on higher pitches before lower ones, again a plus for low instrument players.
The one problem that I've had with these tuners is that one of them had to be set to A-439 to tune pitches that other tuners recognized as A=440. Strange.
