Amazon.com When Steven Spielberg was an adolescent, his first home movie was abackyard war film. When he toured Europe with Duel in his 20s, he saw old men crumble in front of headstones at Omaha Beach. That image became the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, his film of a mission following the D-day invasion that many have called the most realistic--and maybe the best--war film ever. With 1998 production standards, Spielberg has been able to create a stunning, unparalleled view of war as hell. We are at Omaha Beach as troops are slaughtered by Germans yet overcome the almost insurmountable odds. A stalwart Tom Hanks plays Captain Miller, a soldier's soldier, who takes a small band of troops behind enemy lines to retrieve a private whose three brothers have recently been killed in action. It's a public relations move for the Army, but it has historical precedent dating back to the Civil War. Some critics of the film have labeled the central characters stereotypes. If that is so, this movie gives stereotypes a good name: Tom Sizemore as the deft sergeant, Edward Burns as the hotheaded Private Reiben, Barry Pepper as the religious sniper, Adam Goldberg as the lone Jew, Vin Diesel as the oversize Private Caparzo, Giovanni Ribisi as the soulful medic, and Jeremy Davies, who as a meek corporal gives the film its most memorable performance. The movie is as heavy and realistic as Spielberg's Oscar-winning Schindler's List, but it's more kinetic. Spielberg and his ace technicians (the film won five Oscars: editing (Michael Kahn), cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), sound, sound effects, and directing) deliver battle sequences that wash over the eyes and hit the gut. The violence is extreme but never gratuitous. The final battle, a dizzying display of gusto, empathy, and chaos, leads to a profound repose. Saving Private Ryan touches us deeper than Schindler because it succinctly links the past with how we should feel today. It's the film Spielberg was destined to make. --Doug Thomas

Pretty bass heavy film September 8, 2010 LoBo (Bodø, Norway) I think this film is pretty good, but not the best film i`ve seen. Tom Hanks plays his role nice. I see several familiar faces in this film.
Picture Quality: 5/5
I first saw this film several times on VHS many years, so it was like a completly new experience to watch it again on Blu-ray. It was like watching it again for the first time, because it looks so much better than that lousy VHS version i saw before. I think this film has reference quality. This is the best this film has looked before on home video.
Yes, it has some minor grain, but on my 42 inch screen, it`s hardly noticable. It`s supposed to have grain. I think it`s good they didn`t use any Digital noise reduction to erase the minor film grain. I think it has very good picture quality. I think it looks like a completly new film, even though it`s already 12 years old!. So good is the quality. Think about that.
Audio quality: 4.5/5
Very good use of all the speakers in a 5.1 system. Those countless explosions in this film, have VERY DEEP BASS. I have my SVS pc-13 Ultra at 15 hz mode and loud, it sounds very good. They couldn`t sound any better. Evertime i heard the explosions, it sounded like something exploded right in front of me.
Very realistic sound. The only thing i think they could have improved, was the gunshot effects. I mean i thought they would have more bass. Except the mentioned, i think it has reference sound quality.
Film: 4/5
Overall:4/5
Saving Private Ryan blu-ray September 6, 2010 jason123c 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
First off I this is the greatest war movie of all time. If you haven't seen it you need to. With that being said the blu ray version has horrible video quality. I have the "fixed" blu ray addition with the yellow UPC. The audio appears to be fine but the video quality during the invasion scene has a white hue and streaks. My copy shows streaks on the same scene as Robert Clark Kirchner pic located in the customer's image section of the page. I don't recommend getting this blu ray until the studio fixes the video.

Command is a lonely place August 13, 2010 Michael A Neulander (VA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a retired army officer and an adjunct history professor I thought it was important to review what I consider the best war movies depicting the challenges of leadership and the command of men.
This is the best movie depicting the "lonely place" command can be, especially when you do not believe in the mission! "Saving Private Ryan" is the greatest Hollywood movie showing the reality of infantry combat ever made. The first 30 minutes showing the D-Day invasion was only missing the sense of smell to complete the realism!
Tom Hanks is Ranger Captain John Miller who receives orders from the "top" to take 8 of his men and comb the countryside for airborne Pvt. James Ryan, (Matt Damon), because he has recently lost 3 of his brothers in combat; thus, leaving him as the sole survivor, and the "brass" wants to get him home. Looking for a needle in the haystack and fighting several skirmishes doing it while his men gripe and moan why they must needlessly put their lives in danger is the real life tension and challenge of command that makes this movie # 1 on my list of movies depicting command challenges. I know I cried at the ending, how about you?
