It only makes sense that a television star would turn to a fellow practitioner for his first film. With Run Fatboy Run--no commas, please--Friends' David Schwimmer doesn't reinvent the romantic comedy, but he finds the perfect lovable loser of a lead in TV vet Simon Pegg (Faith in the Future, Spaced). On his wedding day, London lay-about Dennis (Pegg, who co-wrote with Michael Ian Black) deserts his pregnant fiancee, Libby (Crash's Thandie Newton), seconds before the ceremony. Crippling insecurity--which remains unexplored--prevents him from finishing anything ("Not even a sentence," Libby quips). Flash-forward five years, and he's a loving dad to son Jake (the charming Matthew Fenton), but sports a small potbelly, smokes too much and entertains no ambition beyond his job as security guard at a high-end boutique. Fortunately, he has friends, like gambler Gordon (Shaun of the Dead co-star Dylan Moran) and avuncular landlord Mr. Ghoshdashtidar (Harish Patel). Fit American financier Whit (Huff's Hank Azaria) shakes up his routine when he starts seeing Libby. To win her back, Dennis trains for the same 26-mile charity marathon as Whit. No one believes he can make it to the end, and even Dennis has doubts, but true love is a formidable motivator. It may not have been Schwimmer's intention, but there's more chemistry between the buddies than the couples. That makes the movie a must for fans of Pegg and the scene-stealing Moran--but optional for admirers of Newton and Azaria. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars The movie is hilarious...highly recommend!   November 29, 2008
I rented this movie from my local grocery store RedBox and I was very pleased with the plot of the movie and the humor.

The movie is about someone (Simon Pegg's character) who leaves his fiance at the alter when he gets cold feet and this makes her very upset. 5 years later we find out that Pegg's character is much fatter and Thandie Newton's character has found someone else who she is now dating. Newton's character and her new boyfriend are engaged and Simon Pegg's character must fight to win her back. To win her back he competes in a marathon race along with his rival who is Newton's new fiance. In the race chaos breaks out when we find out her fiance is deliberately trying to sabatoge the race and hurt him. I won't elaborate any further so I don't spoil the key elements of the film.

But in closing this is a very funny movie and I highly recommend that you see it with friends. David Schwimmer, the director, does a great job in producing good movies. Also this movie is comparable to Saint Ralph in its content, but Pegg's character doesn't run a marathon for a miracle to save anyone but only to win back his ex!

1 out of 5 stars Simon Pegg Good! ...Movie Bad!   November 20, 2008

Being a huge fan of Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz (Especially Hot Fuzz!) I was expecting more of the same brilliant British humor...

Instead I suffered through another boring, predictable, 'childish-lazy-bathroom-humor' type of movie. I kept thinking, "It has to get better" but it never did!

The jokes were extremely lame, or the humor missed completely; it was absolutely painful at times to watch. And sadly, the "human connection" that should be felt in a story-line such as this was totally unbelieving or non-existent.

Simon Pegg is an excellent actor and he managed to "save" some scenes with his facial expressions and comedic timing. But sadly, all-in-all the movie left me feeling disappointed, annoyed and ripped-off!

4 out of 5 stars Pegg RUNS Away From The Dreaded "One-Hit-Wonder" Curse With This.   November 13, 2008

Do NOT let the title detract you away from this film by Simon "Shawn Of The Dead" Pegg and former Friends star & upcoming director David "Ross" Schwimmer. This is a tale of a 30-something Englishman who five years earlier got cold feet at his wedding and "ran" off from his pregnant fiancee. Now he wants desperately to get back into her and their 5 year old son's life, but a new successful American businessman (Simpsons' Hank Azaria, who does better than expected) is in the way. Soon, Pegg's Dennis sees that an English marathon that Azaria's running in as well is his only chance to prove that he can finally finish something, even though he's slightly out-of-shape and is going to need help to prepare...

I found this movie to be very warm and humorous, great for 30ish Dad's like myself. Pegg does a great job in his typical way, but the title stinks. He's NOT fat, he's got a spare tire, and even it looks a little unnoticable, while others still call him "fatboy". Like other Pegg films, instead of partner Nick "Hot Fuzz" Frost at his side, we now get another Shawn alumni Dylan Moran, who does a great turn as Thandie Newton's cousin and Dennis' best friend. It's been touted as a modern-day English Rocky, and while there's some things that earn it, it's also very funny in some parts too. Comes with trailers, making-of, bloopers and a commentary track with Pegg, Moran, Schwimmer (who still sounds like Ross after breaking up with Rachel), and strangely Pegg's real-life mother (why?), this release is worth a purchase and/or viewing. In fact, I enjoyed it more than Pegg's Hot Fuzz, which was a pretty good film in itself too. A nice surprise of a movie by two men you didn't think had it in them. Just ignore the title, okay?

4 out of 5 stars A 2008 sleeper   November 11, 2008
Run, Fat Boy, Run may very well be the sleeper of 2008. Directed by TV personality David Schwimmer, and starring an array of exceptionally talented comedic actors, the movie is an unexpected delight. Those prepared for little more than fat jokes, gratuitous bad language, and a predictable plot will find a film augmented with really funny physical humor, quick paced hilarious soliloquy, and a mild story line punctuated with gentleness, connectedness and redemption.

There is no question that Simon Pegg, in the starring role of Denise (the fat boy) has a very exciting film future ahead of him. His acting is nuanced-- his capacity for telling an entire story with just facial expressions can not be understated. He is a joy to watch. Schwimmer rounded out all the characters with a fine ensemble.

If you need a non-challenging, light and lively pick me up, this is your film.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Silly, Funny Movie   November 4, 2008
One can say this movie was predictable from the very first scene, but it was still very funny and enjoyable movie. It had great acting and great directing. Great job for the first time director, David Schwimmer! The script moved. One cannot help but cheer for our really, REALLY, out of shape hero! My family loved it! (Be careful if you are watching with young ones. This movie is rated PG-13 and contains mild sexual innuendoes.) This DVD accommodates both widescreen and fullscreen.
