Clint Eastwood's 1978 comedy introduces Filo Beddoe, a truck driver and mechanic whose daily life is an absurd grind. He's constantly coming up short on money, love, and anything else to help him get through the day, while also saddled with a loony mother (deliciously played by Ruth Gordon), a best friend (Geoffrey Lewis) who's not too swift on the uptake, and an orangutan named Clyde who fights almost as well as Clint. While moonlighting as a bare-knuckle fighter, Clint finally meets the girl of his dreams (Sondra Locke), a snooty country singer who rebuffs him even as he pursues her, trailed by bikers and brawlers. It's Eastwood's magnetism and charm that make this more than a mere string of comic sketches, and things move along quickly enough to be entertaining, if a little thin. Clyde is a natural scene-stealer, but it's Ruth Gordon's crazy, cranky old coot who steals the movie. --Robert Lane

2 out of 5 stars Cheap for a Reason.   November 23, 2008
I know I used to love this movie as a child when it was on cable back around 1980 and I have not seen it since those days so I figured that I would get it on the best format available today.

I look at reviews of BD's before I buy and reviews were favorable, but maybe they forgot to mention a few things. The intro to the film is of a bootleg/grainy/high compression quality to the point that I feared that this would be the whole film! I started thinking to myself, "this is why it is so cheap." However, after the intro, the picture quality is on par with The Shining on BD. So it is enough to see the HD and not complain, but not mind-blowing.

The sound is what it is. It has surround effects, but they are subtle. It is clear, but it does not sound as if it had gone through a modern era digital remaster. It just sounds like a 70's movie sounds but clearer. The bas does not have that strong of an impact except for the music - which sounded pretty good.

Upon watching the intro I was thiking that I would have to sell it, but after the intro was over, I may just keep it. I am still waiting for Superfly, Shaft(all 3), West Side Story and some other 70's black films al in remastered audio and true surround sound. I need to hear the former's powerful soundtracks done right!

5 out of 5 stars dumb fun   November 17, 2008
This is a dumb movie thats fun for what it is. And it aged much better than most other movies of that era. Eastwood plays a blue-collar weekend fighter who owns an "ape" (I know its not an ape) and chases after Sandra Locke. The movie is a showcase for a whole bunch of character actors as well.

The blu-ray transfer looks much better than the DVD which is a comment on how bad the DVD was in terms of video quality. The blu-ray transfer of the film was done on a budget. Its ok. But nothing special.

This is no great film. Its throwaway entertainment compentently done. Enjoy it for what it is.

A good Clint Eastwood comedy which could've been great except for Clint's infatuation with Sandra Locke at the time. Ruth Gordon and Clyde the orangutan make this DVD ever the more enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Every wich way but Lose Bluy-ray   October 18, 2008
A very funny movie, the ape and the old lady make this a must watch, the blue-ray looks much better than the dvd but not as good as if they did better restore of the film elements.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased with the shipping and product conditions:   September 30, 2008
The DVD film came packaged together with another in great condition and I saw or found no flaws or defects at all. The shipping conditions were perfect look forward to doing more business with the individuals in the future.
