Beats laptops 4 times its size and 5 times its price! December 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I went into the U100 with pretty low expectations - I wanted a "disposable" laptop to take on a cruise that could handle my digital photos and videos but had to be small and light. I was thinking of a 1.6 ghz cheapo laptop and had not had the best experiences in the past but this blew me away.
First off, the display is LED backlit - and its more than bright enough to read outside! My dell 17" 1920x1200 laptop display can't do that. Then I dove into it.
I have a car power adapter for my dell - a deep cycle marine battery Optima Blue Top D34M High-Power Deep-Cycle Battery (870CA) and a 1000 W inverter Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1000 Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter to provide AC power over 100 watts for the dell 17". The 6 cell battery pack on U100 runs it for almost 6 hours while the dell gets about 45 minutes on a heavy duty battery! I continued to be amazed about this little jewel.
Pros: 802.11 b/g/n! - and it's sensitivity is finding networks my intel board can not BLUETOOTH - in a small sized unit like this I hardly expected factory bluetooth FAST - the halfnium processor from intel is really holding up its deal for using no more than 4 watts of power - less than a night light and 25 times less than my dell system needs. This thing has the feel of a big heavy laptop without the twin fans and hotspots on the bottom. Wide - the display has a 1024x600 format which I admit is a bit unusual but it is definitely widescreen and the 1024 lets you see a full webpage wide. Nitpick here - expect to scroll up and down a bit more than with a larger display - but side to side is fine at 1024 pixels wide. USB 2.0 x 3 ports - expansion here is no problem SD card slot - another great feature, and it's running 8 times faster than the SD card slot on a brand new HP quad-core $2K desktop Webcam - You can not tell me this tiny unit has a webcam, and a high resolution one at that? It does. It's a little dark - but another nitpick there. It's nice to have at times and built in. It also has an LED next to it to tell you its being used - great feature. Built in microphone - someone thought about it. Most builtin mics sound awful because of fans and disk noise. The U100 has a tiny mic in the upper corner of the display. With the built in stereo speakers below the keyboard, there is enough separation between the mic and speakers to run skype on this and go out the 802.11 b/g/n link. RJ-45 - yep - got one of those in case you have a wired link and no wireless. Use windows to make a local access point out of your U100 for others! mic/line interface (pink) and line / headphone (green) output plus VGA connector to link to a projector or a bigger display. Thats a pretty full compliment - not everyhing and doesnt have a digital output, but it will run projectors fine. LED status indicators - A blue star indicates the unit is powered on and integrated into the power button which is fully configurable. Down where the leds can be seen with the cover closed there is a blue led for bluetooth turned on, an LED for 802.11 on/off, snooze light, battery charging led, caps lock, num lock, scroll lock, and hard disk usage. I never expected so much indication in something so small and cheap.
Comment - neither a pro nor a con - there is NO LATCH on the lid. It has a spring to hold it shut and that works well for the purpose. A latch really isnt needed. The light weight is a great feature after carrying around a 10+ lb laptop to get a good display & graphics card.
Con - It's hard to find any but the trackpad lacks the scrolling features of larger systems and larger trackpads. It does require you to tap the pad for a single click and uses the big single button as the "right" hand mouse button for windows. Some people don't like tapping and dragging on the pad, I've been doing it for years so it works fine for me. People who don't like to use the pad to click with will miss the extra buttons and should buy a usb mouse. The only other con is they soldered the first GB of ram to the motherboard and put a socket in for the second $10 in memory to get to 2 GB. The socket probably cost more than $10. They probably did not know about the price drop in ram costs and left options open thankfully with the socket.
Best of all it's STABLE (even with the 2GB addition) - I've run stress testing for 24 hours since I received it and not a single fault has been found.
Things to do list with your new U100
1 - go buy one of these - at $400 you're set to start and well equipped with windows XP home include and the Intel Atom (Halfnium) processor which runs 1/4 day on 0.73 - 1.2 volts and 4.3 watts / 1.6 ghz from its 6 cell battery
2 - spend $10 on a ddr2 1 GB ram module - they put the socket inside but did not put the ram into it. You will need to break the security seal but you'll get a full 2GB unit. You can also change out the wireless if you want to and add a bigger disk drive. The case screws are machine screw into brass retainers, so you can open it more than once without needing electrical tape to hold it together. Upgrades are easy.
3 - ebay sells a 9 cell battery (this comes with a 6 cell and gives 5.5 hours of usage with it) - I'd expect a full 8 hour day with the 9 cell battery pack and its under $100.
FINALLY a laptop you can use for 8 hours without charging. Its about time.
Best deal for a netbook December 2, 2008 I bought and play with this unit for 2 weeks now and I love it. It serve all my needs as a carry around secondary computer. I have been comparing this unit with SAMSUNG NC10-14GW White and I choose this unit over Samsung over 2 reasons.
1. This unit is cheaper than the Samsung by $33.0 (mine is $453 including shipping). The extra $$ enough for me to bought and upgrade this little baby to 2GB by buying a 1GB($20) memory and still have jingle in my pocket.
2. The unit come with an empty 1GB slot and you only need to buy a 1GM memory stick compare with Samsung with 1 slot. This mean with Samsang you have to buy a 2GB stick to upgrade and have to go through the trouble to resell the 1GB stick.
The spec on both unit look almost identical except the keyboard layout. The Samsang might have a more logical layout but this MSI just need a little get use to and didn't post any problem for me.
Upgrading the memory almost like a no brainer and it took me, a no tech, only 5 min and works out beautifully. Just remember to write to MSI tech support to get an authorization to keep your warranty for drilling through the warranty label covering one of the 9 holes to remove the cover. I don't know about the Samsang, but this MSI Wind is designed for easy replacement/upgrade of memory or the hard drive.
I think this is the best deal for netbook at this time.
Excellent little notebook. November 29, 2008 This is a fantastic little notebook. I don't want to call it a netbook, since it does so much more than surf the net, like the early netbooks. The screen is big enough to view web sites with the browser in full screen mode without having to scroll sideways. I bought this to take on the bus (I have a 45 minute bus ride to work each way, and the buses have Wi-Fi). It is small enough to work well in the cramped confines of a bus seat, but big enough to be able to get my homework done. That consists of reading PDFs, writing Word docs, online research, and PowerPoint presentations. It is fast and powerful enough to do all of this with ease, even when I have 5 or 6 windows open and as many tabs open in Firefox. I did upgrade to 2 GB RAM. ****** NOTE: I bought the 1GB RAM (Crucial)that Amazon offers with the notebook, it did not work in my machine. BSODs and endless reboot loops resulted. I read on some MSI Wind forums that Corsair Value Select memory worked for many people, so I tried that and it is working fine, even at 24% overclock. All in all, this notebook is a great value, and a valuable tool for anybody that needs a small notebook to carry around.
OMG the Wind rocks November 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The larger battery helps balance the netbook so that it's not so screen heavy, which in turn prevents the computer from falling forward. The keyboard is workable, which is more than I can say about other netbooks. The netbook also runs cool relative to a standard laptop and has an amazing long battery life. The 10" screen is nice and clear, and speed is comparable to a standard laptop. To top it all off the price is under $500. Seriously the only thing I can find wrong with this computer is the fact that upgrading the RAM voids warranty. So if that's the only thing that a picky guy like me can find wrong, there's something seriously right about this product.
Very useful November 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's small size allows me to carry everywhere, battery life also is very long (6 cell gives about 4 hours). I highly recommend it.
