Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Sister Souljah, the hip-hop generation's number one author and most compelling storyteller, delivers a powerful story about love and loyalty, strength and family. In her bestselling novel, The Coldest Winter Ever, Sister Souljah introduced the world to Midnight, a brave but humble lieutenant to a prominent underworld businessman. Now, in a highly anticipated follow-up to her million-selling masterpiece, she brings readers into the life and dangerously close to the heart of this silent, fearless young man.

Raised in a wealthy, influential, Islamic African family, Midnight enjoys a life of comfort, confidence, and protection. Midnight's father provides him with a veil of privilege and deep, devoted love, but he never hides the truth about the fierce challenges of the world outside of his estate. So when Midnight's father's empire is attacked, he sends Midnight with his mother to the United States.

In the streets of Brooklyn, a young Midnight uses his Islamic mind-set and African intelligence to protect the ones he loves, build a business, reclaim his wealth and status, and remain true to his beliefs.

Midnight, a handsome and passionate young man, attracts many women. How he interacts and deals with them is a unique adventure. This is a highly sensual and tremendous love story about what a man is willing to risk and give to the women he loves most. Midnight will remain in your mind and beat in your heart for a lifetime.

Her "raw and true voice" (Publishers Weekly) will both soothe and arouse you. In a beautifully written and masterfully woven story, Sister Souljah has given us Midnight, and solidified her presence as the mother of all contemporary urban literature.

5 out of 5 stars Not Looking for A Continuation   December 2, 2008
First, I have to say this book is definitely one of a kind. I really wasn't looking for a continuation of The Coldest Winter Ever (although this is the best URBAN book of all times). I'm excited she brought it to us differently. There aren't many authors that do. With the pictures helping us to visualize the people, the cultural...at the end of the book feeling the respect for this young man. I have to say well done and congratulations on taking another route with this urban ghetto love story. I don't want to give full details because I'm hoping IF you are a true reader of African American books (fiction or nonfiction) you run out an buy Midnight...I did. kp

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Novel   December 1, 2008
First of all, let me express that though I was disappointed that I didn't get to read the continuation of Winter's story, I was into Midnight's story quite well. I like the fact that from birth, his father taught him all he needed to know to interact in the world, especially when he had to go to the USA with his mother at the age of seven and do all business and personal business for her. Not only that, he thought up the idea of starting a side business for his mother doing just about the same thing that she was doing in the Sudan. And it thrived; at the same time, he was a conscientious Muslim, protected his family and even had to resort to murder at times. What amazed me about him was that he was so insightful and mature for the age that he did it with better than one grown. I also liked the way he learned from the things he encountered. Would I call this a gangster love story? No, because for one, though he could have been, Midnight was no gangster. what I like about it is how Sister Souljah brings up comparisons on how things were handled in the Sudan as opposed as to how it was handled in the U.S. and it brings some food for thought. Very good and insigtful story. I was caught from the first page to the very end, and if you ask me, there is a sequel to this because it just left you hanging. Akemi goes back under duress with her father in spite of the fact that she and Midnight marry. So he goes and tries to bring her back and the story ends there. Just left us hanging. So do he get her back? or do he go not? or will he try Bangs? I liked Bangs' character too though I felt sorry for her.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Sequel, No Action, But it is DIFFERENT   December 1, 2008
I was waiting and waiting and waiting for this book to come out and it was nothing like I expected. The plot was non-existent, there was no climax, and not enough conflict/character development. Despite all this there were times the book still drew me in and I enjoyed it at times. However, I did struggle to get through it untl page 400.

Like many others readers I was very disapointed in this quote on quote sequel to the Coldest Winter Ever. The book is definitley not a sequel and has nothing to do with her first book. I was willing to put that fact aside and read the book anyway. The book was dense, and different not a typical urban read at all. I applaud Sister Souljah to writing something different and introudcing readers into a whole new world of a Sudanese immigrant, and a boy growing up Muslim in urban America. While at times I found the book fascinating bottom line there was no plot development. There was no action in the book, there were not enough compelling stories between Midnight and other characters. Bangs seemed to be the one bright spot in the book and nothing much evolved with her and Midnight until the last 100 pages. Bottom line Sister Souljah exposed readers to something new and innovative; however, she failed to develop a story while doing so. Instead she came up with 500 pages of repetition, and not enough action.

5 out of 5 stars OK it's not a sequel, So it's still a good read!!!   November 30, 2008
Everyone is rating this book b/c they assumed it was a sequel to TCWE!! OK, so it's not!!! Why give it a negative rating based upon what you expected. The story of Midnight is a very detail story of a young boy from the age of 7 to 14. It's a very well written story about his muslim faith and the honor he has for his mother and family!! This is a great read if you enjoying reading books. I actually had to go back and read the TCWE because I forgot what role Midnight had in the book.
