Product Description

You can run from the grave, but you can't hide . . .

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, working for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She's still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind.

Being around him awakens all her emotions, from the adrenaline kick of slaying vamps side by side to the reckless passion that consumed them. But a price on her head—wanted: dead or half-alive—means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones. And no matter how hard she tries to keep things professional between them, she'll find that desire lasts forever . . . and that Bones won't let her get away again.

5 out of 5 stars One Foot in the Grave   July 4, 2008
I really enjoyed reading it and constantly found myself thinking about what would happen to Cat next.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't Gel for Me   July 2, 2008
I prefer Urban Fantasy to Supernatural Romance, and I knew going into this series that it was SR. (Frankly the covers drew me in, and the jacket promised enough kick-buttery that I felt I could probably overlook the romance angle). I felt the first book was quite entertaining, but this one never quite connected with me.

I'm not entirely sure why that was, but here, I think are some factors:

a) New facts about the supernatural world revealed when they make for convienient plot twists. I'm thinking of two items in particular, which I'm not convinced the author had thought of during her pre-series "world-building".

b) The heroine's "job" never felt right to me. I've worked with (though not for) an number of government agencies, and "freewheeling" is not a term that pops into mind when I want to describe the process. The heroine gets to call her own shots with no oversight or paperwork way too often to be credible.

c) Too much "wish fulfillment". For instance, the fate of the cad who deflowered the heroine in book one comes to mind. Yes he was a cad, but he didn't rape her, and the continuous dishing out of punishment to him just seems spiteful and over the top.

d) Too few consequences. I'm thinking particularly here of a scene near the end of the book, which devalues an earlier scene.

On the plus side, the sex level is amped up from book one, there is some good humor (the two actually cross when the heroine decides a screaming orgasm is the best revenge..) and the government seems to be getting some idea about "good vampires" and "bad vampires".

To save the man she loves from the government, Cat Crawford left Bones years ago. In the meantime, she has adapted to her new life, exacting justice on rogue vampires as an agent of the United States. Thanks to Bones, who is himself a vampire, she is among the most adept at what she does, which makes her a target for assassination. Once again, she needs him in her life, although everyone else says it's a doomed relationship and he should be avoided. Bones is possibly the only person better at what Cat does than she is, and he does bring out her best. Though Cat planned on keeping things professional, Bones had other ideas.

***** If you want to read a book that follows a formula and is virtually indistinguishable from the last urban fantasy romance you read, or reads like a standard romance, except for the fact that the hero or heroine has fangs, fur, or both, then look elsewhere. The Night Huntress series is fresh, though it does have some of the hallmarks of the genre. Cat and Bones are a fantastic pair, perfectly simpatico, even when they are at odds. What's more, he's one of the most compelling heroes since J.D. Robb's Roarke. Don't just take my word for it though, read the books. *****
