5 out of 5 stars Get to it!   December 3, 2008
I've read most of Marcus Buckingham's work from Now, Discover Your Strengths to Go Put Your Strengths to Work, all excellent books on identifying and applying your strengths to your life and vocation. So when I ordered his latest book, The Truth About You, I was a bit skeptical. Was it simply going to be more of the same?

Thankfully it was! But in a very precise and to the point format! Where Now, Discover Your Strengths was precise in identifying strengths, it lacked personal application and direction. Go Put Your Strengths to Work focused in on that application, but was overwhelming in scope and direction. The Truth About You hones it all down to an easy and workable format that leaves one energized, focused, and ready to get to work.

My recommendation, get both Now, Discover Your Strengths and The Truth About You, you'll come away with the tools and knowledge necessary to take your life and vocation to the highest levels possible. Then, if you want to delve deeper, get his other books.

As a Strategic Maximizer*, I congratulate Thomas Nelson and Marcus Buckingham on this work - it is at its very best! The only thing I could add to or recommend for it is you, the reader! Take it, use it, and see if you don't find yourself becoming more than you ever thought or hoped you could be.

*Find out more about this in Now, Discover Your Strengths.

4 out of 5 stars Truth of you needs some truth of Scripture   December 2, 2008
This is one of the most unique interactive books I've seen--ever. Thomas Nelson and Marcus Buckingham have come together to create a package for the generation that is searching for more...

...you'll find some of it in here.

"The Truth About You" is designed to give you focus and purpose. You begin by watching a 20 minute DVD that comes with enhanced features, including Strength Tip videos.

Then comes the reading--110 pages to discover what makes you unique, talented, gifted, and well...YOU. Instead of taking what others believe about you and deciding on where to go or how to serve...this is time spent, just God and you.

Including in the package is a ReMemo Pad--for you to make notes, answer questions, and to remember the important details about this study; details designed to help you focus on what God has gifted you with and how you might use it for his glory and for your purpose.

Perfect for a high school graduate, a college student, or someone just seeking out more to this life than just existing, "The Truth About You" is what you choose to make it. Each part of this study is valuable; all parts used together pack the most power.

My one quibble, again, is lack of Scripture. Even if "The Truth About You" isn't intended as a Bible study--oh, the power it would pack if it WAS a Bible study!! Still, keep your Bible handy as you work through this self-examination of your gifts, talents, strengths and callings.

I have to say that I approached this book with a bit of skepticism. I first became familiar with Marcus Buckingham at the 2007 Willow Creek Leadership Summit. Even though we were hypnotized at his command of the stage and his uncanny ability to communicate to such large audience, we could not ignore the late night infomercial sales pitch that he threw at us. While I understand the Buckingham's basic thesis of working toward your strengths, as a follower of Christ, I cannot help but to be reminded of Jesus' words spoken to Paul in 2 Corinthians chapter twelve verse nine, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (ESV). Paul goes onto conclude in the rest of verse nine, "I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (ESV). So if, the power of God is perfected in weakness and if "God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong" (1 Cor 1:27b) where does The Truth About You fit when the truth about me is that I am a sinner in need of a savior, not the "best advice I will ever get."

Buckingham's advice is five-fold: "(1) Performance is always the point, (2) Your strengths aren't what your good at, and your weaknesses aren't what you're bad at, (3) When it come to the job, the `What' always trumps the `Why' and the `Who,' (4) You'll never find the perfect job, and (5) You'll never turn your weaknesses into strengths" (22).

If performance is always the point, then we have all failed miserably. If my strengths are not what I am good at, then why am I good at what I love to do? If the what trumps the why and the who, then having purpose (why) and other people (who) no longer matter. I may never find the "perfect" job, but . . . he is right on target with this one. If my weaknesses can never be turned into strengths . . . see above.

This is only the beginning of the lies Buckingham wants to tell in his version of the "truth about you." His first of "Five things that sound right but aren't" should clue you in on Marcus' version of other people are objects to be exploited so that I can get to the top mentality. That is, we should not treat people like we want to be treated (101). With this rejection of simple common courtesy reflects the self-centered, cutthroat, with no awareness of God perspective that this book is written from.

To embrace the teachings of this book is to reject the reality that you are a creature of God. God, however, stands in the way of any self-absorbed plans. For too many today, God seems like an absentee landlord, and a foolish one at that--easily betrayed and cheated. The truth about you is that you are God's wonderfully and uniquely made being that stands as the apple of his eye. When you acknowledge the truth that you are in utter dependence on Him, even for the very air you breathe, then His strength can be perfected in your weakness.

5 out of 5 stars More of the same, but still great   December 1, 2008

I bean reading Marcus Buckingham in "Now, Discover Your Strengths," then read "Go Put Your Strengths to Work" and "StrengthsFinder 2.0". I then ran a bible study with teens at our church having each of them do the StrengtheFinder, which went somewhat well for all of them, and followed it with the video series "Trombone Player Wanted."

While Trombone Player Wanted begins the process of beginning to live your strengths, there hasn't been an actual walk through that makes it pretty easy to take Marcus' ideas and make them a reality in my life.

This book has a DVD discussing strengths and finding your potential outside the "norm" or society, your boss, parents, teachers, whoever else is exerting pressure on how you should live. Then the book walks you through now to discover what you really do enjoy doing, and has you write those down in a small journal/flip-book provided. Then focus on some of the things which aren't your gifts.

If you've read earlier books by Marcus Buckingham, and applied them to your life successfully, this book won't be very useful to you. Even if you have read the books and not put all the practices to work, the book itself won't be incredibly different. It's more a work that takes "Go, Put Your Strengths to Work" and "Trombone Player Wanted" together into a short book that you can go through within a day or two and begin using right away.

If you haven't read Marcus Buckingham before, or are looking for other ways to put his teachings into practice, this book will be a great help.

4 out of 5 stars Motivational   November 26, 2008
The Truth About You doesn't truly contain any big "secrets" per se, but does present helpful information in a format that will likely motivate most readers to pursue success in their own lives. The CD and the format of the book make it easy to approach and read in short sittings. I could see this book being very helpful to young adults or people considering life changes at any stage.
