Product Description The Nazis unleashed a war on the world which resulted in the deaths of countless millions. During the twelve years which the Third Reich lasted, they wreaked devastation on an unprecedented scale, including the genocidal mass murder of civilians. But where did their murderous ideology come from, and how did they seize power? Defeated in the First World War, Germany was humiliated by the Treaty of Versailles, forced to pay ruinous reparations and deprived of large tracts of land. When the fragile Weimar Republic was plunged into chaos and hyperinflation by the worldwide Great Depression, Hitler exploited fears of communism to have himself appointed Chancellor in 1933, before assuming sole executive power as Fuhrer shortly afterwards.Fascinating photographs reveal key events in the Nazis' rise and fall: from Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, in 1938, during which synagogues were burned, businesses wrecked and thousands of Jews sent to concentration camps, to the Blitzkrieg which quickly overran most of Europe; from the Battle of Britain in the west to the Holocaust and total war on the Eastern Front; and, from the 1944 D-Day landings on the coast of Normandy to the last days of the Reich in the ruins of Berlin.

Lots of great photographs and lots of typos November 17, 2008 The pictures in this book are excellent. It is the written summary of the the rise and fall of the Nazis that has me concerned. They label the Tsarist Army of Russia in WWI as the Red Army. Obviously this is false. Then they misidentify Rudolf Hoess and Rudolf Hess in several photos and the writing. Rudolf Hoess was the Commadant of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and Rudolf Hess was the Hitler's assistant who flew to Great Britain during the war. Both people were identified as Hoess throughout the whole book. Obviously someone did not catch this error. They had some great information on Der Sturmer, which I did not know. The photos were excellent.
The errors are glaring. However the photos and the short summary provide a reader with the basics on the Nazis and World War Two.
My name, too. August 29, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wondered how my brother got my name on this book that he sent me, then realized the author & I have the same name. I have not read the entire book, yet, but the mystery of how my father was released from the concentration camp after Kristallnacht was finally answered. (page 122) "... most were allowed to leave after 3 months, provided they agreed to leave Germany for good." And we did! Thanks, Claire Welch
