Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

Celebrated for their courage, vision, hospitality, and spiritual giftedness, it's no wonder women were so important to God's plan revealed in the Old and New Testaments. It wasn't their natural qualities that made these women extraordinary but the power of the one true God whom they worshipped and served.

In Twelve Extraordinary Women, you'll learn more than fascinating information about these women, you'll discover-perhaps for the first time-the unmistakable chronology of God's redemptive work in history through their lives. These women were not ancillary to His plan, they were at the very heart of it.

1 out of 5 stars Any useful insights compromised by conjecture and opinion.   November 29, 2008
Twelve Extraordinary Women seems, to me, to be an exercise in extraordinary, opinion-laden criticism of 12 notable women in the Bible. Often, it can be helpful to consider what might have been going on in the lives and minds of characters in the Bible, so we can better relate to and learn from them. However, it is the author's responsibility to carefully delineate fact from speculation. MacArthur failed to do this. In this book, the author blends his personal conjectures, historical context, and Biblical facts so seamlessly that the reader is unable to distinguish between them.

Furthermore, Scriptural references are cited and conclusions are drawn that do not always seem to be supported by the cited Scripture. All in all, it leaves the reader feeling uneasy about what was actually learned in the reading of it.

Emotionally I also found the book troubling, in that the author liberally casts dispersions on women of the Bible that G-d (Who is its divine author) declares as models of faith and whom are included, no doubt, for a purpose, which was certainly not one to discourage and denigrate women.

After forcing myself to read about the first three women in the book, I simply could not read any more, as I didn't want to internalize the mixed bag of opinion, speculation and facts that the author presents.

1 out of 5 stars Author's assumptions   November 25, 2008
The author has a interesting imagination. He makes a lot of assumptions on what the women are thinking or doing. Also, his comments are from a sexist viewpoint! When women make mistakes, they are sinners; but for the men it's ok!!

2 out of 5 stars Women of the Bible are always worth studying.   November 12, 2008

John MacArthur presents women of the Bible in an easy-to-ready manner and I appreciate the depth of each presentation. However, our group of ladies was critical thinkers and if there were instances when speculation occurred on the author's part or if he interpreted the Scripture with a certain slant, we were able to compare those thoughts against the Word and determine for ourselves what the Truth truly was/is. A book can guide, as did "12 Extraordinary Women", but the Bible still is the ultimate study guide. The Bible is where life-changing verses can penetrate the heart and change lives.

5 out of 5 stars 12 extraordinary woman   October 30, 2008

This book is really great! It talks about the woman in the bible but it also shows me how much similar they are to me and other woman around me. They are woman seeking God's heart just like we. The only difference it time. That was then and this is now. Us. I recommend this book to all the extraordinary women our there. Because we are EXTRAORDINARY!

2 out of 5 stars not a good book   September 18, 2008

I did not care for this book. Some of the content in this book is not only wrong, but insulting! The chapter on Mary is particularly offensive. I could not even read it. I would not recommend this book to others.
