About Speedo In 1914, Speedo was founded in Australia by Alexander MacRae, a 22-year-old Scottish immigrant who arrived in the country in 1910. The company began when MacRae Hosiery manufacturers, established by Alexander in 1914, extended the manufacture of underwear to swimwear and became MacRae Knitting Mills. A naming competition was held by the staff in 1928 and won by a Captain Parsonson, who coined the slogan, "Speed on in your Speedos." In 1929, the first swimsuits were in production and it didn't take long for Speedo to successfully establish itself. World War II caused the brand turn over 90% of it's manufacturing to war production, providing the armed services with vital equipment such as mosquito nets. After the war, Speedo opened a new factory and was able to re-establish itself, due to increased demand for swimsuits. In 1951, Speedo Knitting Mills (Holdings) Ltd, was incorporated and became a publicly traded company on the Sydney Stock exchange. Speedo hit the international stage in earnest, at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, and a few years later the brand grew on a more global scale. Export sales to the USA began and an international division was set up to monitor trade in New Zealand, Japan and South Africa. The expansion of the brand continued, and in 1976, Speedo was appointed as the official swimwear for the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where 52 out of 54 countries wore their swimsuits. Speedo continues to make its mark in the pool and on the beach today. Many world class athletes who wear Speedo include U.S. phenomenon Michael Phelps, legendary Australian swimmer Grant Hackett, world record holder Kosuke Kitajima from Japan, and Holland's Inge de Bruijn. No water in my eyes! November 25, 2008 I decided to swim to get some cardio & lung workouts, which have helped me tremendously so I can start to jog. I am able to swim underwater and not worry about water in my eyes, thanks to these Speedo Vanquisher Plus goggles!!
Good set of goggles November 11, 2008 I have been very pleased with the quality and durability of these goggles. I have been using them for almost a year and would definitely recommend them.
College Swimmer's Review October 31, 2008 This is my 5th year of swimming and my 1st year swimming in college. I've tried a few other brands, but I've found vanquishers to be reliable and water-tight. The mirrored swim goggle is especially nice outside where it's sunny, but can be a little annoying indoors.
Excellent with the exception of the anti-fog October 6, 2008 These are by far the most comfortable goggles I've ever worn. They've sure come a long way from 20 years ago when I swam competitively! They form a perfect but comfortable seal on my face. They do not significantly mark my face (aside from the lack of a tan I'm developing around my eyes).
The straps are great, although at their maximum length they were just able to fit comfortably around my (apparently large) head.
I did have to use one of the provided, smaller nose bridge pieces. They were every bit as hard as others have said to remove! What a nightmare. You have to use so much force you feel like you're sure to break the goggles. But, once I successfully replaced it, I got the wonderful fit described above.
The mirroring is significant and is perfect for a sunny day, even backstroke with the bright sun hitting you straight in the face. I wouldn't recommend them for indoor swimming as it would likely be too dark.
The anti-fog is quite disappointing. Now, about a month after purchase and swimming ~4 times per week, the anti-fog is completely useless. While the pool in which I swim is chlorinated, I took all the steps I could to avoid this loss. I _never_ touched the inside, I avoided getting pool water on the inside, and I washed the goggles out twice, once in freshwater just after exiting the pool, and again when I got home. Nevertheless, they fog up pretty badly. It's possible, however, that my eyelashes are to blame as they brush against the lens if the suction gets strong.
Despite this, I love and highly recommend these goggles and doubt I could find a better product until a more durable anti-fog solution comes along.
Good Goggles October 1, 2008 Work very well, and have them in my school colors (a plus). However the anti fog coating seemed to wear off decently quick, but I do not have anything else to compare it to, so I could be completely misinformed.
