4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice, Rim Drive is the way to go...   October 9, 2008

Last Fall I shopped until my head hurt...fluid? magnetic? tire or rim? etc. I opted for this rim drive, and I'm thankful I made the right choice the first time. I bought the "dial" versus the remote version - your own bike's gears are the best resistance adjustment you can have!

My set-up is a Trek 820 - Even though this rim driven unit doesn't care what tires you have, I changed the stock knobbies to Kenda Kross Plus Front/Rear Slick XC Tire, 26 x 1.95" (road bike manners w/ trail edges). Popping your bike in and out of the unit is a snap. I takes all of 20 seconds to mount or unmount the bike. Great in Spring/Fall when you can occasionally get outside.

Anyway, this thing is solid to the core. Whisper quiet (not having owned a tire-drive unit, I can't compare, but this thing has zero sound). I had 4 months of heavy use on it last winter, and couldn't be happier. Price was lower last year - I think I bought from "GreenMountain" (through Amazon) for about $132. BTW, Thought I'd save the $20 for a CycleOps block and use a phone book - mistake - buy a block.

Bottom line = I was looking for a compliment and occasional alternative to my home treadmill and dumbells - without dropping $700+ for a bulky, single purposed bike machine - this was exactly what I needed/wanted, and it reintroduced me to an old friend - my bike!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Intermediate Trainer   February 2, 2008
I just got this trainer after much searching both online and in the real world, and I have to say this trainer is great. It is amazingly quiet compared to the normal wheel drive trainers and the flywheel (set at 4 out of 5) in middle gears feels just like moderate outdoor riding. Setup was relatively easy though the manual is almost worthless for that. I recommend it to anyone looking in the $100-$200 range.

5 out of 5 stars I found the perfect trainer, my search is over!   December 19, 2007
I have owned a few trainers and after purchasing the Minoura RDA 850 I have no need to search for another trainer. It encompasses everything that I want in a resistance trainer at a low price. It provides great resistance; it is incredibly quiet, although it is portable it is still very sturdy, it is very affordable for the quality you get; and last but not least, the Rim Drive feature eliminates changing your tire to a slick in order to use it. I ride a mountain bike and I love the fact that I do not have to change my tire. I've researched and tried a number of trainers; the Minoura RDA 850 gives the most bang for your buck! Hands down!

5 out of 5 stars Bike Trainer   October 22, 2007

This product was very easy to set up taking just a few minutes, and is just as easy to disassemble when not in use. There are several levels of resistance making it great for beginners as well as the more seasoned rider. I used this product several times a week and have experienced no problems at all. Overall it is an excellent product at a reasonable price.

1 out of 5 stars loud and disappointing   October 12, 2007

the set-up instructions are incomplete, and worse, the "trouble shooting" section doesn't help at all. after 5 minutes of use it started squeeking loudly and no amount of adjustment seems to help. stay away from this one
