Product Description Epakitin, a new nutritional supplement from Vetoquinol USA, Inc., safely and effectively supports kidney function and helps slow down the progression of chronic kidney disease. Easy to use in cats and dogs Helps pets feel better and live longer Great-tasting, easy-to-administer powder Can be used alone, mixed with regular food or in combination with a prescription renal diet Chronic Kidney Disease is one of the leading causes of death in dogs and cats. In North America, it is estimated that 8% of cats aged 10 years or more suffer from CKD. CKD affects approximately 2.4% of dogs aged 10 years or older. The diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease is generally based on low urine density and the increase of creatininemia, uremia and hyperphosphatemia, as well as clinical symptoms. By the time these symptoms become noticeable, serious damage may have occurred. Only when 75% of nephrons are no longer functional can clinical and biochemical signs of CKD be detected. While chronic kidney disease is incurable, adding Epakitin to the diet enables you to protect the renal function of dogs and cats better than ever. It is possible to slow down the auto-destructive cycle of CKD and increase life expectancy by limiting the increase of phosphatemia, with the help of a low phosphorus diet and/or by adding a phosphate binder to the diet. Epakitin is a chitosan-based nutritional supplement that is both a phosphate binder and uremic reducer. In clinical trials chitosan has been proven effective in decreasing phosphatemia, as well as reducing urea and creatinine blood levels. Ingredients: Lactose, Calcium Carbonate, Chitosan, Soy Protein. Indications For Use In Cats and Dogs. Allow free access to fresh water during administration. Administration can be life long. This is a nutritional supplement. For supporting renal function in cats and dogs. Administration: Give one scoop per 10 lbs orally twice daily with food. Always make sure fresh water is available for y

great miracle product December 20, 2008 i had 600 dollars in bills at the vet with my 13 old cat. i was told she was beginning to have kidney failure due to her age. evidently common these days.... after 2 expensive visits to the vet i ordered this product in november.. she has been great ever since. she eats, plays, and is not dehydrated. i know it is not a miracle cure but it sure makes the extra days extra special..
Lifesaver, Life Extender, Miracle December 16, 2008 We wish we had this in 2005 when our 16 year old kitty Cleo passed away from CRF. When her sister Shorty was diagnosed in Oct. 2005, we were told she might have a month or might have a year. Well, she made it to age 19 1/2 in Sept. 2008 (3 years later!) and we're sure that Epakitin is the reason. We added the Azodyl last year when we became aware of it, so that may have helped too. We mixed both in with grain-free Wellness brand food to reduce phosphorus and toxin buildup. And NO dry food, big no-no! Good luck, and bless your sweet pootie or woozle.
Definitely saw improvement... Give it a try.... A+ November 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this for my cat Angel who has the beginnings of renal failure. I use a level spoon FOR EACH MEAL (spoon included in the container) and mix it well with Science Diet KD for cats. It is one of the best cat foods because it is meaty, a good source of protein and has a low phospherus content. I put angel on it for about 1 month and had her retested. The results showed that her levels had lowered and on one of the tests, she went completely into the normal range! Not bad! I'm very happy.
I SHOULD ALSO TELL YOU.... Angel has lost her appetite in the last few months and the doctor decided to try something new that he hadnt done before. He put Angel on a appetite stimulant for 3 weeks. This seemed to MAKE AN INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCE. It seemed to stimulate her desire to eat and this in turn got her eating normally again. She's acting like a normal cat. The doctor told me that he cant keep Angel on it forever because the stimulant could cause renal failure too but he told me that he's had several cases where once the cat go's off the stimulant, he has no problem eating again.
Dont forget to keep plenty of fresh water around the house. These animals get very toxic if they arent drinking all the time....(their kidneys arent doing what their supposed to do). The water seems to flush their bodies out....
The appetite stimulant apparently can only be used for cats. Dogs dont respond well to them....fyi...

This product has proven to be very efficient for my dog, who was diagnosed with kidney disease several months ago. Epakitin serves two major functions: 1)to collect phosphorus and protein in the digestive tract and stomach by clumping it all together for faster expulsion 2)to make the kidney-diet food taste better to you dog, so that your dog can continue to have a healthy appetite, that will in turn allow him/her to further dilute and expell the toxins in his/her body that his/her kidneys can no longer successfully break down.
