I have a very energetic Jack Russell. His energy was not the problem, his hunting instincts were! I have tried numerous products and numerous training techniques. No other collar (various harnesses and a pinch collar) have been close to deterring his pulling. This collar is the only collar that has made him focus on me during walking! This collar practically self corrects my dog. When he pulls, the leash tightens, and forces his nose back toward me. Also, for the first time ever, he does not bark at people or other dogs as we walk. This was the best investment ever. I actually want to walk him.

I have used this particular head collar on four different dogs with mixed results. Please note that all dogs were slowly and carefully desensitized to the Gentle Leader head collar, as directed by trainers and the training materials included with the head collar.
- The first was a dog-reactive dog.
The collar did discourage pulling under low stress conditions and made pulling less painful. It allowed for greater control of the dog. However, if the dog was not kept soundly distracted he would return to fussing over the nose strap. He became so frustrated by the collar that he would rub his face on the concrete, claw at the nose strap, and come away bleeding. I returned to desensitizing him to the collar, assuming I had not given him enough time to adjust. I found myself spending more time training him to accept the collar than working on modifying his unwanted behaviors.
- The second dog was a fearful dog.
The dog would completely shut down whenever he wore the collar away from his safe zone. We spent more time trying to desensitize him to wearing the collar outside of his safe zone. Because he would shut down and stop responding we could not get any results.
- The third dog was a confident, social dog.
This particular dog had pulled his whole life. To my knowledge, no one had attempted to discourage the pulling behavior. I noticed improvement as soon as we left the yard. It didn't just lessen the pulling, it stopped it.
- The fourth was an untrained and social puppy.
Not accustomed to rules or boundaries, the puppy was constantly testing the limits of the collar. If he was not properly engaged in training he would return to pawing at the nose strap, hindering training. Distraction caused by the nose strap was lessened by padding the nose strap with faux fur. He was doing fairly well on the collar and with training. One day, another puppy approached and he began that endearing puppy wiggle, wagging his tail so hard his whole body shook. Without warning, he lunged forward. Despite being on a short leash, he hit the end of the leash hard enough that the collar jerked his head sideways. He let out an ear-shattering yelp and acted subdued thereafter. For safety reasons, we discontinued the use of the head collar.
Pros:
- Gives greater control to the dog handler, regardless of the dog's size and the handler's strength.
- Lessens or eliminates the pain and discomfort the handler experiences when dogs do pull.
- Discourages pulling.
- Can be used with either traditional punishment based training or progressive reward based training.
- Will not choke the dog when used with nose strap
Cons:
- Requires time for dogs to become accustomed to this training tool.
- Requires careful adjustment of straps -- improper fit impedes training.
- Can rub hair off and/or cause irritation if worn or fitted improperly.
- Capable of injuring a dog that lunges or does "zoomies" while worn and leashed.
- May cause fearful dogs to shut down and inhibit behavior change.
- May exacerbate reactive or aggressive dogs' unwanted behavior.
- The nose strap may irritate the dog, requiring padding to be sewn on by owner.
- The nose strap is not durable and can be easily destroyed by chewers.
- Dogs CAN learn to ignore the head collar and pull anyway, meaning you will still need to teach the dog how to walk with you.
- Short-muzzled dogs may find it easy to remove the nose strap.
- Results vary.
For successful training, I recommend developing mutual respect and trust with your dog. With mutual respect and trust there isn't anything you can't accomplish with your dog.
If I can teach my dog to walk nicely with me, ANYONE can. Don't give up!
Annoying to use October 20, 2008
Just hated this thing from the get go. Couldn't figure it out despite the video. Just too complicated all around. And once on, didn't give the results expected. Tossed it and grabbed the halti.

I aopted an 80 pound German Sheppard that had no training, she pulls constantly to the point of giving me blishter and she acts really goofy around other dogs. So I purchased the Gentle Lead, watched the DVD, (a must) and she has practically trained herslef, with very slight correction from me. I am very sensative to any pain for ahrm with my companion animals so therefore I was a bit concerned about this lead, but after using it I feel I can recommend it as a useful tool. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PULL HARD OR DO A SHARP JERK/TUG LIKE THE PREVIOUS PERSON MENTIONED. Now we go for walk and thee is no tugging or pulling. Give it a try and I hope you have the same success.

THE DVD
1. It's extremely easy to understand with examples of real people with real dogs with real reactions.
2. It's short. You can watch it all in 5-10 minutes that it takes you to change your clothes to walk the dog after work.
3. It shows you potential problems putting the collar on, things you can do wrong, and ways your dog may react with ways to overcome those quickly.
4. It shows you why the collar works, as well as how it works.
5. It shows you why you have to have the appropriate size and how to tell if it's not. (If it's not working, you either bought the wrong size or you're putting it on too loosely! It is NOT the fault of the product.)
THE COLLAR
1. It uses dog behavior and instincts to correct inappropriate dog walking behaviors...pulling ahead, dragging behind, etc.
2. It is very humane, using slight pressure at the exact time of bad behavior, rather than pain or shocking or vocal correction by you at the wrong time.
3. The packaging clearly tells you what size you need, based on sizes of typical breeds. Know how big your dog (or puppy) is and be prepared to compare it against other popular breeds. If it doesn't work when you get it home, you bought the wrong size. It is NOT the fault of the product!
4. It will take you about 10 minutes to put it on if you are very liberal with the treats and you watch the entire video...if not, expect much longer. Because of this, I suggest you NOT take it off until the dog has been wearing it and is completely used to it. (Trust me, you'll know when this is, and it won't be the first day.)
YOUR RESULTS
1. You can walk your dog rather than being dragged.
2. Squirrels, groups of people or kids in the street, birds, the mailman, leaves blowing, insects buzzing by, and other dogs being walked, in yards or behind fences all become interests as you both walk, rather than nuisances for your and signals to run for your dog.
3. No more owner shoulder pain (from being pulled) or dislocation, blisters on your hands (from holding leashes that are so restrictive your hands go numb), or bruised hips (from wrapping the dog's leash around your body for leverage against your dog).
4. No more choking, hacking dogs that can't breathe, pant, eat, or bark.
5. Pleasant 3 MILE (!) walks that are healthful for you and your pup are now your norm, rather than 10-30 minute tolerable frustrations that must be endured on a daily basis for the dog's health and well-being.
6. You still need to train your dog basic commands...sit, stay, come, heel are still needed, but the Gentle Leader can help you with this after your walks and during your regular activities. You'll be in a much better mood to train your dog after a pleasant walk, and your dog can be trained even faster since you look forward to time with your pet.
WHY I SHOULD KNOW
1. I've had our 11 month old (former stray/local shelter rescue) beagle/lab mix for nine days.
2. For the first seven days, I experienced walking results that equaled number three.
3. For the last two days, I'm enjoying walking results equaling number four.
4. My husband and I have spent over $680 dollars in the past nine days on this dog, it's accessories, toys, food, treats, grooming supplies, bedding, crate, gates, leashes, tie-outs, and tags, and it really is the best $20.00 I spent.
IF YOU STILL CAN'T DECIDE
1. Go buy one (your pet store chain carries them). Keep the receipt. If the DVD and collar don't work for you within 24 hours, take it back to the store and exchange it for something more pathetic and ineffective. At least you made an effort before you gave up.
