A great measuring device for real estate agents, remodeling workers, HVAC installers, landscapers, and do-it-yourselfers, Black & Decker's Marksman estimates room area and volume in a snap. Just point and shoot at any wall or ceiling to determine how much paint you'll need to cover the room, how much carpet you'll need to cover the floor, or how many square feet the house offers the buyer. The Marksman emits sound waves that bounce off walls or ceilings and back to the unit as it measures distance. A pivoting head makes it easy to take measurements from many different positions--a great feature for work in tight areas. A selectable display shows measurements, and a memory chip stores measurements so there's no searching for pen and pad or trying to remember all those numbers. To estimate room area, just point and click at two walls. Estimating the volume of a room is easy, too. Simply point and click, first at the ceiling and then at two walls. A calculator feature lets you calculate and store square feet, volume and room depth for easy reference. The Marksman displays in either metric or standard measurements. Black & Decker BDSM100 Marksman Sonic Distance Measure is a perfect tool and I would recommend everyone to get one, easy to read and use.

Its accuracy is poor. You will never know what the true distance is to the laser dot until you either use a tape measure or a true laser measurer. The thing picks up all sorts of obstacles near the path to the laser dot and so you almost never get the same measurement twice. For all I know it may work well outdoors to an unencumbered target, but indoors around clutter it stinks. Save your money for a true laser measurer.
Great Deal and Works Well for Realtors November 22, 2008
Bought this for my mom who uses it for estimates for rentals. It quickly became a hit at her work place at the ease of use and several of her coworkers inquired on where to get it. However, it does miscalculate every now and then (estimating a 23 feet room as a 50 feet room) but that can be easily over come by double/triple checking the estimates (which is as easy as pressing a button). Great price as well

Actually I bought this one to my wife, which is architect. She loved it! Now the task of measuring has become easier. No more bending to take measures.
