5 out of 5 stars Worked exactly as I needed   December 7, 2008
I have the hammock, and I have two trees that are just barely sufficiently far apart for the hammock. After a full season of use (I took them down after we had a few weeks of snow), things are still working well. They help up fine with no serious signs of wear on either the straps, or the walnut trees. (did I mention that I have been lounging under a whole bunch of walnuts?)

The most difficult part is to figure out:

1. How high to place the straps so that the hammock will hang as you desire.

2. Precisely how to initially position the strap around the tree so that it will be the perfect length. The strap works by wrapping around the tree.

You will probably lose 15 minutes figuring out exactly how you need to position the straps (that is how long I took anyway). It then did just fine with a whole lot of abuse, including the neighbor kids that like to really swing on the hammock....

These are great straps!

5 out of 5 stars Pawley's Island Tree Saver Straps.   August 15, 2008
These straps appear to cause very little if any stress for the trees. I recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Hammock Install in Minutes!   June 7, 2008
These tree straps are great! Here is what I did to get the right fit.
Hold the strap at the fabric loop end where you want your hammock to hook in. Next take the metal ring end and wrap around the tree. When you get to the fabric loop part if you have enough to go around again go THROUGH the fabric loop with the metal ring and go around again. My trees are medium size and I went around 2 times. With the left over strap just loop the metal end around the staring point (top to bottom) until you have wrapped the strap to a point that it is short enough for your hammock. Hook your hammock into the metal ring and you are done. EASY. It took me about 10 mins to do two and hook the hammock in. That was because I had to do it twice. The directions say to start at 4'6" above the ground. For my stretchy hammock that was WAY to low. So I just unwrapped it and got a ladder. At 4'6" the hammock looked great, but when I sat in it, I was on the ground, so take that into consideration when chosing your starting point in terms of height. The straps seem very strong and appear to be made out of seat belt type material. They just blend in with my trees which are Oak. Also, our entire family of 3 which includes 2 adults and one 9 year old all swing very safely on these straps. Very sturdy. I love the idea of being able to have a hammock attached to my trees without harming the trees. I also love how easy it was to put them on, even by myself with no tools required. I recommend them!

5 out of 5 stars Well Made   July 22, 2007

Strong strap, good heavy hardware. If you use it (or anything else) on pine trees, you'll have to clean it up.

Regarding another reviewer's comment: no, you're not stuck with too long or too short a tail. Here's what to do.

Begin by holding the loop on the tree and wind around the tree until you get to the ring end.

Stop at the "too long" setting, pass the ring through the loop, and continue around the tree IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. At some point you'll have the length you need - however it will probably be pointing in a wrong direction. Note where it's pointing!

Now undo it all and begin again, but this time start the loop end at a point on the tree where, after you've wrapped it all, the ring end will point in your desired direction (toward the hammock).

If you think you'll use the same tree again, mark the starting point with a small notch on the tree and hanging the hammock will be a snap.

3 out of 5 stars Don't fit all trees   April 11, 2007

Don't get me wrong. These work. Problem is, you wrap them around your tree until you can't make a full pass around the tree anymore and then you hang the hammock from the ring. On our trees (which are average sized older trees) they went around twice, but left so much of a tail that we would have to have them 15 feet in the air for the hammock to be off of the ground. So we had to use the screws anyway. We're still saving them for camping, though.
