Amazon.com Never underestimate the regenerative powers of Metallica. Following the stripped-down Load and Re-Load, they've returned to the raw, vitriolic savagery of their earlier canon, using 1984's Ride the Lightning as a template for St. Anger. The title track provides the psychic lynchpin of the album by combining the bombast and defiance of the band's earliest high-water marks with more deliberate lyrics and emotional nakedness. Equally cathartic is "Some Kind of Monster," a lumbering beast of a song that declares, "This is the voice of silence no more." Despite that claim, there's an economy to these lyrics; James Hetfield's raw-toothed growl only occasionally punctuates the menacing soundscapes. In fact, "Dirty Windows," the standout track here, is a shimmering five-minute instrumental that's free of the baroque trappings that sometimes clutter the Metallica landscape. --Jaan Uhelszki

Great album by a once great band! September 7, 2008 It seems to be the cool thing to do today, knock a great album for no apparent reason. They did exactly what they set out to do with this album, make a raw and heavy monster. If you're looking for Master of Puppets II look elsewhere, this band has grown up and unfortunately will never hit that level of music again, with age comes change and in all honesty this was the best change Metallica has made since their first 4 albums.
No solos? Who cares. Metallica decided to not make a traditional album which apparently says put 2 solos in each song. This album didn't need solos, it is great without them.
Now onto the actual album, this album gets better with each listen. "Frantic" is a great way to open an album, its raw and frenetic, "Dirty Window" shows us some very heavy riffing we thought was no longer in this band and this just continues to the end of the album. They tuned the snare and you will either love it or hate it, same goes for the low tuned slung guitar riffing.
I hope the rest of Death Magnetic is good because the singles sucked and it could very well be their last album, and from what I've heard it's nowhere near as good as this.
oh my, is this a bad record September 6, 2008 I've been a Metallica fan since Ride the Lightning. This album is an abominable piece of garbage. The drums and vocals are just abyssmal (seriously, this may rank as the all-time worst drum recording). Thankfully Death Magnetic is sounding really good, maybe we can all just forget St Anger ever came out?!?

Don't dismiss this disc September 1, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Alright, I was born in 1985. My introduction to Metallica was the black album, Load the first I owned. I thouroughly enjoy everything they've released since the black album, I'll even go so far as to say there's not much of anything wrong with any of them (Garage Inc lagged a bit in spots, that's about it). In my many years of Metallica appreciation, I've learned that "serious" Metallica fans are INVARIABLY the MOST UNGRATEFUL, FASCISTIC, HYPERCRITICAL BASS-TURDS anyone will ever meet. ALL of them. One of these people, a friend of mine, loaned me Ride the lightning, Kill 'Em All, and AJFA in high school ("You gotta hear REAL Metallica, dude!") and I was underwhelmed. It was certainly head-and-heels above most other 80's rock, but still chock-full of the cornball lyrics and boring, self-indulgent guitar solos that characetrized mainstream rock in that horrible decade. To everyone who does not yet have an opinion of this CD: 85% of these one-star reviews are from people still pissed of that these guys cut their hair. This is easily my favorite Metallica cd. Over the years, Metallica's done alot of tinkering with their formula, and I get a feeling St. Anger was a long time coming. This is a complete and explosive re-imagining of some of the most talented musicians in rock. It's furious, chaotic, meandering, unabashedly unrefined. The wierdly muffled drums give the whole album a punky undercurrent. Lyrics are simplistic, charged, colorful and brutal- poetic without being pretentious. The music is frenzied and unpredictable and immediately engaging. This is an album that refuses to be ignored. Fans of rock music get a cd that's daring, challenging, unexpected, and expertly executed- SERIOUS Metallica fans get another cd that did not exist in the 80's to tear apart, another chance to shout the word "sellout" without a second's consideration. See how this album makes everyone happy?
Metallica Hates Their fans? August 28, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
OH MY GOD I FINNALY GET IT! St.Anger is a concept album! they wanted their fans to get as angry as they felt while recording it! it's ugly, poorly made, monotonous, annoying....enough to really piss most people off. see also "Megadeth - Risk" "Anthrax - Volume 8 The Threat Is Real". mountains of cess ridden hatred and filth be laid upon this waste of plastic.
