Will do the job August 6, 2008
This is a large and heavy tool. It is accurate compared to my smaller 6" caliper, which is always nice to know that the items you're measuring with line up with each other.
The box it comes in is lightweight wood, maybe balsa on the outsides. It probably will not protect the unit if dropped, but provides more than adequate protection for storage, and minor bumps and such.
The display is large and easy to read, even for my eyes. The buttons are clearly marked, but have additional functions which are not explained. NO MANUAL was included with this tool, although there was a 'calibration sheet' which wasn't fully filled out. I can not get the unit to turn off, so I'm assuming that it's an automatic shut off, even though the switch says 'On/Off.' I hope I don't burn through a battery every time I use this because I can't shut it off.
If it had a manual, it would be a lot nicer.
The outside of the jaws are rounded, and not flat. If you are trying to measure inside of large objects, you'll have to make sure that the jaws are flat to get an accurate measurement. Currently, for my needs, it will suffice. Others should take note before buying if you need flat surfaces.
As I said, it's heavy, and it doesn't feel flimsy at all. Thumbwheel isn't loose, and it tracks nicely.
All in all, I would say that for the price, this is a good value for a large digital caliper.
