3 out of 5 stars I really like the product, but I don't see myself reading books on it   November 18, 2008
I'm a big Amazon fan and I really admire what you are trying to do with the Kindle. Moreover, I am a book lover and someone familiarized with the history of the book. My two cents:

The Kindle is a great product, but...
for it to revolutionize the way I read books, the price per copy has to drop drastically. At $9.99 per Kindle book, I simply prefer to buy the hard copy, which is usually only a few dollars more expensive. Moreover, this lets me have a tangible "thing" that I can collect and look at on my bookshelves. The sense of ownership, the visual and tactile pleasure of the physicial book (even for cheapo or "disposable" books) is there in a way that the Kindle book does not offer. Now, if a Kindle book cost $2.99 or $3.99, I might buy both the physical and the digital copy of books I care about and buy the Kindle copy exclusively in the case of books I really don't care about. For now, I use it for reading my Wall Street Journal and saving a few trees every year. In any case, I look forward to see how the Kindle evolves and, believe me, I understand the economics behind the $9.99 price tag. The problem is that, for me, it is a serious stumbling block for the technology to conquer.

5 out of 5 stars How did I live without you?   November 18, 2008

I wanted to wait until I had used the Kindle for a fair amount of time before leaving an Amazon review. I was very excited about receiving this and didn't want to leave an inital review showing my overexcitement.

I have been using the Kindle for a little over two weeks now I'm my commute to and from work. I will be one of the first to admit this device is not perfect. There are a few aspects I feel could benefit from improvement. As many other reviewers have pointed out, it would be nice to have folders on the home page in order to organize everything more neatly. I have aslo found that a few of the books I really wanted to have on the Kindle was no available, but I soon discovered this is no fault of Amazons. It is up to the publishers to tranfer their books to Kindle Versions.

I believe although this product has a few flaws, it is a perfect solution for my needs. I travel about two hours everyday on a train going to and from work. I used to carry a large book with me (usually hardcover), and occasionaly I would have two in case I finished one on the way. The Kindla has completely changed my commute and it is now much easier. My bag is much lighter and I have an abundant amount of book options to choose from. I also discovered that if a book I want is no on Amazon.com, I can find it else where and easily convert it to my kindle either by plugging my Kindle into my computer and tranfering it or paying a 10 cent fee to e-mail it straight to my Kindle.

I do not highlight passages, or use ths kindle to take notes and do research. I only enjoy daily leisure reading and have found this product the be the perect commuters companion. There was a time where I was skeptical about ebooks but the Kindle is very much like reading a regular book. I read many reviews saying they didn't liket he design of the device, but I do not find any difficulty and rarely accidently press the previous or next page buttons located on either side. The screen also looks exactly like a page of a book so once I dive into my reading I forget I'm even reading from an electronic book. I would (and have) recommend this product to anyone who travels and like to read. This light, small device has changed my ideas of e-books.

5 out of 5 stars The future for education?   November 18, 2008

I received my Kindle about two weeks ago and absolutely love it, even though I live in Montana where Whispernet is not available. I occasionally travel outside the state so will be able to use it then. Books are easy to load on the Kindle with my computer so I'm happy for now. I won't be subscribing to any magazines, newspapers or blogs without the wireless technology. Overall, that's no big deal for me.

What most intrigues me about the Kindle is its possible future in education. I'm a teacher and have shown this device to my high school students. Many are fascinated by it, especially the possibility that one day textbooks may be Kindlized (is that a word?) and students won't have to carry around heavy textbooks.

While the Whispernet techonology is great (so I've heard), it wouldn't be a requirement in school use as long as textbooks can be downloaded via the internet. Perhaps one day a Kindle will be a necessary item just like the graphing calculators are now.

Thanks for a wonderful product, Amazon. Keep education in mind.

4 out of 5 stars Kindle Experience   November 18, 2008

I received my Kindle as a wonderful gift from my sister. I knew nothing about the Kindle and had no expectations. I was very pleased and surprised with the capabilities. How great to download a book in a few seconds!! How wonderful to either shop for books on the Kindle or on Amazon.com and send them to the Kindle. I can make the print or read out as big as I want... so I can read without my glasses.

The downside for me is the awkwardness of holding the Kindle. As I move from side-to-side in bed at night or move around in a chair, I am very likely to lose my place. There are no simple numbered pages to return to and unless you bookmark the page, you will have to do some digging to find your place. I would like more edges to hold onto and would rather touch the side of the screen to turn a page, rather than hit the "previous" or "next" page buttons. With the cover on, I have a bit more room to hold the edges.

My wish list for future Kindle's would be to add more room on the edges to hold the Kindle, have more definable page numbers, and be able to download your address book.

There are so many more uses for future Kindles, and I can't wait for the newer generations to fine tune the few problems I found.

5 out of 5 stars Will PROS outweigh the CONS in the longrun? Probably....   November 17, 2008

Life changing device - it's so light and at your fingertips for a quick paragraph or two throughout the day. It does take a little while to learn turning pages when you want (instead of accidentally), but after a while it's second nature. There is no eyestrain, unless you read for two hours straight without a break (don't do that). Problems: 1. The position of the Alt key (needed to put it to "sleep") is hard to reach while it's in the cover. Same for the on/off and wireless on/off (on the back). 2. It's much too expensive (it should be half the present price), and books and periodicals are expensive as well given there's no paper or delivery involved. 3. I can't copy the material to use on my computer or lend it to another person? My books have always been read by at least 3-4 other people and then given to Goodwill - no such long life for any book purchased on the Kindle. 4. I'm concerned if I'm receiving ALL content of a book. So I'm still trying to decide if I want to box it up and return it. Will the good things outweigh the bad over time? Probably, especially if changes are made by the manufacturers and sellers. It's a great idea, and I see a huge need by school children......but who can afford it and are their texts available in kindle form?
