Rocking Roadmate! December 29, 2008 I got this for Xmas and am loving it! I moved from Phoenix area to Dallas area and have gotten lost even with mapquest maps, Google maps and a big Texas road atlas. This thing actually works right out of the box! The second time I used it I didn't even look at the screen (traffic) but it gave such good directions I just listened to "her". It was like having someone sit next to you and tell you where to turn.
2 minor considerations: I have a MAC, not a windooz PC so I'm not sure how that will affect updates, but I figure I can mooch from my darling daughter. The other thing is that the documentation is all on the CD in a .pdf file. Good enough but I would have liked a hard copy manual.
waste of time and money!! December 27, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have heard of all kinds of good things about the GPS navigation devices..and after some research I decided to purchase the roadmate 1412. Well right out of the box the problem is that there is no owner's manual to have in your car with you..they provide a disk that has 53 pages if you would like to print out..on your ink and paper!! Also the device doesn't come with a charger for your home..must be purchased additionally! So here I am up in northern Michigan and must first print 53 pages and go to my van in 20 degree weather to charge my device....I called Technical Support (was disconnected on 3 times before getting through to someone)on this issue and they seemed not to have any solutions to my problem and simple said last year they gave out owner's manuals and that a can purchase a AC charger...thanks for the help!!! I will start my search for a new device!!!
Excellent product, but the maps are so-so December 23, 2008 I researched quite a few GPS' prior to selecting this one and overall I am very pleased with it. After purchasing this one, I purchased a TomTom ONE XL 4.3-Inch for a family member and tried it out. It wasn't as easy to operate as the Magellan 1412, but what I liked better about the TomTom was that it had points of interest available that the Magellan did not. Its maps were also more updated.
Good basic GPS December 20, 2008 This is my first GPS. Besides a few hickups regarding the current firmware, I am pleased with its performance. If you're not looking to spend a mint, but want good directions and POIs, and don't need an MP3 player in your GPS, the 1412 will do the job.
I was impressed with how fast it triangulates. It even worked in doors!
I would have liked a contrast adjustment in bright light situations.
Besides that, 4 stars...
So far it's awesome. December 16, 2008 After much research I decided to go with the Roadmate 1412 for the price and the bells, not the whistles. I don't need to have an mp3 player, bluetooth, jpeg picture viewer, and whatever the "fancy" ones do. Got it for my wife as a present (well, me too) and without reading the directions, was able to figure how to use it. I was impressed as soon as I turned it on, boom, there's my location. I used it today for the first time, and was impressed on the clarity of the voice, and the speed of the reconfiguration of the route if you go a different way. Figuring out the POI's was pretty straightforward. Found my wifes place of employment on the POI. We'll find out how it performs when we go to my sisters in Chicago next weekend. I like the width of the screen, it's easy to see, and easy to decipher what route you need to be on. Haven't tried it a night yet to see how the screen is, whether or not it's distracting. So far I'm very happy I got this(for my wife).
